Charybdis is a sea monster only known by her monsterous mouth, with which she causes whirlpools by drinking from the ocean three times each day. The whirlpools are powerful enough to suck down ships, and she happily devours their crews. She was once a greedy woman who stole cattle for food, and for this crime Zeus transformed her into a monster.[1]

She sits on one side of a narrow channel of water off the coast of Sicily. On the other side, the monster Scylla lives on a small island. In order to enter the strait, sailors would have to navigate directly between the two.[1]
